It was a weekend of high drama, resilience, and tactical grit for the GG Grassroots Soccer Academy junior teams as both the U14 and U16 squads took to the pitch in the latest round of the prestigious Munhumutapa Cup this past Saturday.

The U14 side faced a stern test against a sharp Sporting Braga Lions outfit. In a tightly contested, end-to-end affair, both sides traded chances, but it was Sporting Braga Lions who found the decisive breakthrough. Despite a valiant push for an equalizer in the closing stages, the young GG Grassroots side fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat. Though eliminated, the U14s displayed tremendous heart, organizational discipline, and work ethic that bodes well for the remainder of their league campaign.

The U16 match proved to be an absolute thriller. After falling behind 1-0 to a well-worked goal, the U16 squad showed exceptional maturity and composure under pressure. Digging deep in the second half, GG Grassroots mounted a steady comeback, establishing control in midfield and constantly pressing the opposition defense.

Their persistence paid off in regulation time when a brilliant team build-up produced a well-deserved equalizer to make it 1-1.

With no further goals in regulation, the tie moved straight to the high-stakes intensity of a penalty shootout. Cool heads prevailed under the spotlight, as the GG Grassroots penalty takers showed nerves of steel, converting four of their spot-kicks while the goalkeeper produced crucial saves to secure a 4-2 victory on penalties and send the club through to the next round of the tournament.

Huge credit goes to coaches Nyasha Meda and Tawanda Denhere for their outstanding leadership and tactical preparation. Guiding the "Junior Expendables," both coaches have instilled a fierce winning culture, mental resilience, and technical excellence across the development program. Their work on and off the training pitch continues to shine through in big-match moments.
